Night Guards
Many people are bruxers (teeth grinders). Some people may do this consciously during the day, but most people are not even aware of this habit. Grinding your teeth wears them down by thinning the enamel. Once this protective structure is lost, the softer part of the tooth (called dentin) wears much more quickly. A guard will allow jaw function without tooth wear.
Usually worn at night, an occlusal guard, is similar to a mouth guard worn by athletes, but needs to allow for jaw function during sleep. All night guards are custom fitted for comfort and to allow muscle relaxation. Your dentist will take an impression of your teeth and have the night guard created by a dental lab. Night guards are durable and can be used for up to 10 years.
You may be able to train your jaw to rest with your teeth apart rather than with them touching. This will help relax your facial muscles and reduce the stress on your jaw joint.
